Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic TLD is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level domain names remained functional.
